Wildlife Tip of The Week

Are groundhogs legal to own in your state

Many states in the United States have some pretty lax animal ownership laws, and you would think that a state that allows people to own cougars would allow citizens to own groundhogs. There is no reference to owning a groundhog under current laws, but one would expect that animal to fall under guidelines about exotic pets. If you're going to try to keep a groundhog as a pet, you should be discouraged against catching one in the wild and then trying to domesticate it. Not only will an adult groundhog be very set in its ways, these animals are ferocious fighters when they feel threatened. The large teeth of a groundhog can do far more damage to human tissue than a dog bite. Attempting to tame an adult wild animal is a dangerous and often futile effort. There may not be many groundhog breeders out there, but there's going to be a few. If you can obtain a baby groundhog and then raise it in captivity, you will have a much better chance of having a pet than having a captured, angry wild animal. Remember, too, that groundhogs are rodents and carry with them the same potential for diseases as rats, squirrels, and beavers.
