Wildlife Tip of The Week

Information about snake venom

There are three types of toxins found in snake venom, and the way it works will very much depend on what kind of toxin the venom is made up of. There are cytotoxins, neurotoxins, and hemotoxins. Some snakes will have just one of them, others will have a combination of all three, or just two of. Rattlesnakes and mambas are good examples of snake venoms that contain neurotoxins, and you can add cobras and even sea snakes to the list too. Cytotoxins, contained in cobra and mamba species again, can stop the heart from beating, causing death in severe cases. This is the more primitive form of the venom mechanism, starting a digestion process on the animal before it has even been killed yet, and literally causes muscles to diethe heart being just one of them. Hemotoxins can be found in snakes such as the West African Gaboon Viper, and basically cases huge blood clots to form, clots that will kill you if left untreated. As you can imagine, a bite from the latter would need urgent medical attention. The thing to remember when you come against a snake is that you never know what kind of snake it is, or where it has come from. It could be someone's pet, it could be a wild snake, it could be venomous, aggressive, angry, dangerous ... If you spot a snake, leave it well alone and if it's in your way, call in a professional to come and remove it.
