Wildlife Tip of The Week

Poisonous black snakes in United States

There are many black snakes in United States; however there is one that stands out from all the rest as deadly. The cottonmouth snake, a semi-aquatic serpent, is one of the deadly pit vipers in North America. It lives near bodies of water, though it can be found crossing vast expanses of dry land. The cottonmouth has a dark body, and can be recognized by the way it swims in the water. Unlike the common water snake, a cottonmouth's body will remain visible as it swims. Water snakes are less buoyant and swim with only their heads visible. Not only can the cottonmouth be distinguished by this behavior, when it is threatened, the animal displays its fangs, showing a mouth that is stark white. The pale skin inside the jaw is what has given the snake its name. It is also known as a water moccasin, though the origins of this moniker are unknown. Cottonmouth snakes do not see humans as prey; therefore they do not deliberately attack people. The most common reason for all snake bites in The United States is human error; someone made the mistake of thinking it would be a good idea to pick the snake up or try to kill it. A serpent has to feel threatened before it becomes dangerous.
