Wildlife Tip of The Week

Dead dog

When people have issues with stray animals, it is usually with feral cats that have climbed into a home and then died. It is not as common to find a dead dog, though canine strays will also look for areas around a home to shelter in. The spaces under porches, decks, and sheds make for perfect hideouts from the elements. Sometimes a dog might be sick or old and looking for a place to spend its final hours. If you've discovered a dead dog on your property, use caution when handling the remains. Dogs carry a number of infectious diseases, some of which are spread by fleas, ticks, and mites. A dead dog can still contain the pathogens for illness, so make sure you wear gloves and a mask when moving the body. If you're not willing to take on the work of removing the animal and disposing of the remains, you can call a professional to come and clean up the mess. Depending on where the dead dog has lodged itself, some minor home repair may also be required. If you want to make sure there is no lingering odor, all remnants of the decomposing tissue need to be cleaned or removed.
