Wildlife Tip of The Week

Raccoon poop in pool

Raccoons carry their fair share of illnesses that are dangerous to people, though they are no way as disease-ridden as rats. Any animal droppings have the potential to cause illness, just as human waste can cause illness. If you have found raccoon poop in your pool, the first thing you need to look at is the type of pool you are maintaining. A decorative pool will need to be emptied and cleaned if the water volume is not large enough to dilute any fecal material that entered the enclosure. One of the big concerns with raccoon poop is leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that harbors in water and can be transmitted to people. If your pool is chemical-free, it should be drained and thoroughly cleaned and then allowed to air-dry. A swimming pool with chlorine is a different story. Chlorine will kill almost anything, and leptospirosis is not immune to the chemical. It is still rather unpleasant to have raccoon poop floating in the water, but by scooping the dropping out and allowing the water to run through the filter, you should be fine. The best way to prevent raccoon poop in a swimming pool is to place a cover over the area at night.
