Wildlife Tip of The Week
With snakes, the mating habits and the baby / egg situation is not a one-size-fits-all. Different species and type of snake will have different habits, just as they'll have different habitats, different dietary choices, different attitudes and temperaments, etc. The diamondback rattlesnake is one of the most venomous snakes you'll find in the US and these lay egg actually inside their own bodies that gestate for / months before birthing around five to fifteen youngsters which are considered independent from the moment they're born. Flip things around and look at a slightly different species of snake, a non-venomous northern water snake for example, and you have a shorter gestation period, only around three to four months, a thirty snakes can be born at once during a birthing season of August to October. A garden snake can have up to snakes in one litter, and all babies are independent from birth, and the water moccasin will have around ten or twelve young, every other year, again with babies that are independent from birth. Although it is believed that snakes lay eggs which are then incubated, only around seventy percent of all snake species actually do this (oviparous), the rest giving birth to live young, also know as viviparous.
