Wildlife Tip of The Week

Do groundhogs live in United States

Groundhogs are found throughout much of North America, and United States certainly has its fair share. If you're trying to move away from groundhogs, you'd better go north, not south. The groundhog is an interesting creature. It can be solitary or can live in a family group. While awkward in appearance, the animal is surprisingly fast and decidedly aggressive when cornered. It lives in an extensive burrow system which helps it locate and consume plant roots. The groundhog will hibernate in colder climates, building up stores of fat for use when food is scarce. Surprisingly, the mortality rate for young groundhogs is high during their first hibernation. If you're having an issue with a groundhog on your property, the best method to catch it is with a cage trap. Cage traps can be used to capture and relocate a problem animal. There are, of course, lethal body gripping traps that can be used, but a cage trap is just as effective and easily reused. There is no need to kill a groundhog just because it had the audacity to live under your porch or shed. These animals may be aggressive fighters, but the groundhog is not an animal that will deliberately harm your or your family.
