Wildlife Tip of The Week
Snake feces is not a one-size-fits-all situation. Different species of snakes will have different types, sixes, colors, and even textures of poop, and for the most part, it will very much depend on what the snake eats. If you were to have a snake (like a corn snake) in a vivarium and feed it a diet of mice, the poop will be white and very chalky in nature, mainly comprised of the bones, feathers, fur and teeth of the animal it can't digest. More ‘wild' snakes, those eating more plant life, bugs, frogs, spiders, birds, etc., will have poop that looks very much like the poop of other animalsbrown, long, sticky and smelly. It all depends on what the animal eats and if the animal doesn't eat for a while, something most snakes manage to survive on, the animal simply won't poop. It's as simple as that. If you're finding a lot of snake poop, you're providing the snake with a lot of food. Also, the size of the poop will also give you an idea of the size of the snakethe bigger the snake feces, the bigger the specimen. You may also find hints in the feces itself to give you a clue as to what the species of the culprit who made it could be. Scales found within the feces could suggest a snake that eats other snakes, and those white and chalky in nature will be fed mostly mice, rats and other vermin. If you find feathers, it could be a sign once again of a bigger snake, one that preys on the flying critters.
