Wildlife Tip of The Week

Why do I have mice in the attic

It may seem like a mystery to us when we find mice in what we thought was a new or well-maintained home. The reality is that a mouse does not need very much space to infiltrate a building, and any crack can serve as that entry point. When people think of keeping their homes in good repair, they often think “big”, repairing broken siding and damaged foundations. A mouse can enter your home through an uneven door jam or a weathered window pane; maybe the vent on your roof has become unhinged. A mouse needs less than an inch or wiggle room to get inside your home. This is why you must be very thorough when it comes to maintaining your home. Leave no shingle unsecured and no hole unsealed. Even if you already have mice inside, repairing all those exterior openings is the first step in getting rid of the infestation. Mice that are trapped inside of the home will be more likely to investigate the snap traps that will be left out for them. Place the traps in the attic where you have found chew marks or mouse droppings. These are the locations the mouse likes to frequent.
