Wildlife Tip of The Week
Any animal that is exhibiting strange behavior should be avoided at all costs, and a circling squirrel is not acting normal. It is not common for a squirrel to get rabies, but that does not mean it is impossible. Squirrels are more likely than other mammals to have the virus. A circling squirrel should be an immediate suspect as rabies is characterized by neurologic signs like instability, strange gait, and head tilt. There are other illnesses that can cause a squirrel to circle. Cuterebra infection, caused by a fly larva that migrates into the brain, is an occasional problem for animals that spend a lot of time in the grass. The fly will lay its eggs in the grass. These eggs are then inhaled by grazing animals or by critters that spend a lot of time in the yard. The grub stage of the fly spends its time moving in and out of living tissue. In rare occurrences it will migrate into the brain and die, resulting in brain damage and infection. Regardless of why the squirrel is circling, do not go near it. There is nothing you will be able to do for the animal. If you are insistent on intervening, call a wildlife rehabilitator instead of handling the animal on your own.
