Wildlife Tip of The Week

Does ammonia or mothballs repel snakes?

There are very few repellents which actually work in the battle against snakes invading your property, and mothballs and ammonia generally prove to be not just a dangerous option, but a waste of time too. If you've bought some in the hope they'll work to drive that snake out, you're going to be very sorely disappointed. Even if the snake were to leave, it' will soon be back. That's if you haven't made the necessary precautions, of course. The thing with snakes is that when they invade your property, they're usually doing it to either find food or to have a family. Either way, they'll defend their food and their youngsters as much as they need to, making usually placid animals quite aggressive. When using ammonia especially, you have a bigger chance of maiming the mother, if it even goes near the poison at all, and this will leave you with snake babies to dispose of, ones that will surely die without their mothers care. The only way to get rid of a snake, especially one that you think may have had babies, is to wait for the night time to come and the snake to leave for food, and then have a good look / poke around to see if there's anything left behind. Before you take any action, whether you choose to use mothballs and ammonia to repel snakes or not, make sure you know what you're dealing with. It would be foolish to proceed otherwise.
