Wildlife Tip of The Week
In the same way that skunk spray a foul-smelling liquid, or opossums ‘play dead', snakes bite. They rear their heads up, get into that S-shape, and then strike. Some snakes, up to twenty different types across the US, are venomous so with that nasty, snappy bite, you will also expect venom-problems. The symptoms will vary from snake to snake, and some can be very dangerous indeed. This is especially the case when you take into consideration the fact that almost every venomous snake across the US has a non-venomous twin of sorts. There's also one that looks like one that might be venomous, so you can never really be sure unless you've done your homework and consider yourself to be an ‘expert'. Even then sometimes things can still go wrong. A snake will bite when it feels threatened. This could be a predator trying to make it dinner, or a human trying to trap it to release it somewhere safe. A snake will never hunt out a human to ‘eat' or bite it. It will only bite when it feels attacked or threatened. Remember we are much bigger than the snake. It is only acting out of feardefense. Snakes will get particularly snappy when they are hungry, and also when they are shedding their skin, or guarding a nest of youngsters. Also, one final note to remember, just because the snake is venomous doesn't mean it will inject its venom into you. A venomous snake can ‘dry bite'.
