Wildlife Tip of The Week
If you have been bitted by a snake, you should seek medical attention, preferably as soon as possible. That snake in front of you might look like a safe and non-aggressive, non-venomous water snake but it could just as easily be a cottonmouth snakea venomous snake. They look very similar accept the water snake has a rounded nose and the cottonmouth has a pointier snout. Unless you get up close and personal with these animals, which we're assuming you're not going to want to do after you've already been bitten by it once, you're not going to tell easily whether or not the sane is venomous or not. If you've been bitten, you can't be sure whether or not the venom is getting to work. A snake bite is painful, but not as painful as ignored snake venom which, in some cases, could even prove fatal. When you head to the emergency room, try to build as much of a picture of the scene as you can, using your friends, family or however might be around to help you fill in the gaps. What did the snake look like? How long was it? How was it behaving? Was it a big snake or a small snake? (The bigger, fatter snakes tend to be venomous in most states.) Did it have a rattle at the end of the tail? The more information you can give to your doctor, the better the chance you'll come out of the situation safe and sound.
