Wildlife Tip of The Week

Mexican free tailed bat

The Mexican free tailed bat is one of the most abundant animals in the Americas. These bats like to roost in large numbers and will sometimes roost in buildings though they favor caves. It is not uncommon for these bats to migrate in large numbers from one roost to another. They eat mostly insects detected through use of their echolocation. The bat is not particularly long lived due to predation by animals like hawks, owls, skunks, and snakes. Of the bat populations in The United States, the Mexican free tailed bat has the lowest incidence of rabies. While these animals are primarily active at night, they remain awake for many of the daytime hours, interacting with one another in their roost. Females will group together during mating season, forming their own roosts where they will give birth to offspring. Bat populations are protected by federal law, and if you're experiencing an issue with a roosting group, professional intervention is required. Bats cannot be relocated, and trapping methods involve exclusion tactics. Once the bats are unable to return to the building, they will find a new location.
