Wildlife Tip of The Week

Biology of Pigeons: Life cycle, habitat, biology, diet, etc.

Birds aren’t normally thought of in the same was as raccoons, rats or squirrels in the house but the pigeon is one of the most widespread nuisance pests around the globe, definitely within the USA. They live in the city rather than in ‘wild’ areas, and that’s because we humans offer them so much variety when it comes to feed. Many of us are feeding them, sometimes without even realizing it. It’s hard to understand why a bird could be seen as a pest, especially as many of us are encouraging more wildlife such as birds into your back yards, but the pigeon is a bird that brings with it a lot of disease, and they create quite a disease-ridden mess when left to their own devices also. There are a number of diseases, as well as things such as fleas, ticks and mites, that the pigeons carry with them, many of which can be passed onto humans as well as other wildlife and household pets. This often happens as the scavengers help themselves to the food left out to them, or that we feed them ourselves. They naturally eat a wide variety of foods including seeds and nutseasily found in bird feeders, fruitseasily found on trees and in gardens, earthworms, snails and other insectseasily found in your back yard. Now you know that, it’s easy to understand what keeps them coming back for more.
