Wildlife Tip of The Week

Red United States snakes

There are many snakes in the United States, most of them not identifiable by color alone. That being said, one of the most common red snakes in the state is the red rat snake, also known as the corn snake. Corn snakes are very common and are nonvenomous. They get their name from living beneath corn cribs where they would take advantage of the rodents coming in to feed on loose kernels. The red rat snake actually comes in many different colors. Most of these unique color patterns are only found in captivity bred corn snakes; however, the red hue is one of the common colors seen in the wild. Corn snake have been kept as pets for decades due to their calm demeanor and low inclination toward striking when agitated. All snakes will bite, so do not purchase a corn snake under the impression it won't get annoyed with you and demonstrate that with its fangs. Thankfully, no real harm comes from the corn snake's bite unless the puncture wounds succumb to secondary infection. It is not necessary to kill corn snakes when you find them. They are primarily feeding on rodents, and it is far better to have a snake in your yard than to have rats in the kitchen.
