Wildlife Tip of The Week
Raccoons are problematic whether they are inside of your home or just raiding your property. For the animal that has not yet become a home invader, the best methods of getting rid of it are to remove the tempting items from your property. Most nuisance animals are driven by the need to eat or the need to find shelter. For the majority of the time, a raccoon is drawn to a location because of the presence of food. In cold climates where the inhospitable weather is prolonged, shelter may be more of a priority. To keep raccoons from wanting to be in your yard, you need to make sure that garbage cans are secured and unable to be opened. If you keep a compost pile it should be underground or in a specialized container. Pet food left outside overnight is another huge lure for a raccoon. Some people have even seen these animals come inside the home through a pet door after dog kibble. The raccoon that is living in the attic or crawlspace needs to be trapped and removed. Some states prohibit who can trap a raccoon due to the animal's potential to carry rabies.
