Wildlife Tip of The Week

What do you do when you have pigeons or other birds in the chimney

There is nothing worse than having a pigeon or other bird in your chimney: the flapping and panicking makes a hell of a noise and that's before you get into the logistics of the matter. You either need to get this animal out or it will die. You can't light a fire until the bird has gone. You can't leave it there either because then it'll have babies or invite more pigeon friends to the party. Plus they're flying verminthey carry diseases ... lots of them. Have a listen before you take any action. Can you hear chirping? If you can, it's baby time and you'll need to leave the problem along for a few weeks. This chirping noise is an indicator of young pigeons babies and you won't be able to remove them until they fly the roost, usually within a few weeks. There are also laws to take into accountmoving or disturbing the nests of chimney swifts, for example, is illegal. Can you really be sure that the pigeon is just thata pigeon? If think you may have a pigeon (or other bird) in your chimney, hire a professional. You don't want to kill the bird but you don't want to face criminal action against you in the process of trying to get rid of it.
