Wildlife Tip of The Week

Do repellents get birds like pigeons out of the attic?

There are some repellents you could try when you have a bird or pigeon problem in your attic although, if the truth be told, none of them really work that well. As with many deterrents and repellents you’ll come across with magic and marvelous claims to get rid of virtually any animal you could have a problem with, they either don’t work at all, or only work for a brief period of time, the animal returning once they realize the deterrent won’t actually do any harm to them if they ignore it. Anti-roosting spikes can have some effect, providing an uncomfortable surface that they won’t be able to sit on, or create a nest on. However, this could have a detrimental effect by just forcing them further into your home, and the spikes won’t work at all if they’re already in. In fact, it might just stop them from getting back out again. You could try mothballs and ammonia but there’s a very high chance that they won’t work at all and you’ll just end up poisoning your neighbor’s cat. Noise and sound machines rarely work either because the pigeon has become so well adapted to living alongside humans and the light and noise they already bring. In reality, there are a lot of repellents you could try but they’ll probably be a complete waste of time.
