Rats may be a destructive nuisance animal, but they are relatively easy to trap once you know how to go about it. Rats in the attic are a common issue, and setting up snap traps will be the most logical way to efficiently remove the critters. Setting up traps is not just about slapping some peanut butter on a snap trap and setting the device in the middle of the floor. For a snap trap to be effective, it needs to be put in areas where rats have been travelling. Rats use the same pathways over and over, and they mark these runs with droppings and urine. If you find an area where rodent feces are abundant, resist the urge to clean it up. Place your baited snap trap in this location. The pheromones left behind by the rat's eliminations will continue to tell that rat and any others the area is safe. The creatures will return to the location and will likely find themselves lured in by the temptation of peanut butter. If you want any traps to be effective in an attic, regardless of style or brand, you need to make sure the holes in the exterior of your home have been repaired prior to the trapping process.
