Wildlife Tip of The Week
If you've ever done some research into how to get rid of bird or pigeons from homes, you've come across the ‘old wives tales' about rice and Alka-Seltzers killing or getting rid of a roost of pigeons. I can't tell you how many times I've been asked whether or not it works and there is really only one way to answer the questionno. Definitely not. Stop doing it. Take rice as one examplethe theory is that the dry rice expands when it hits the stomach of the pigeon and because they are unable to get rid of gas, they'll just explode and die. Firstlybirds throw up their food regularly to feed their chicks. Pigeons have chicks all year round so that regurgitating motion is always going on. They'd just throw up the rice if it were that bad for them. Moving swiftly on to the Alka-Seltzers … In much the same way that birds can throw up whatever they've eaten, they can actually burp despite what you may have heard. The excess gas will more than likely make the animal throw up and burp a lot. It's not going to kill the bird unless you use a whole pile of the stuff, and a whole pile of the stuff wouldn't be tempting enough for the bird to eat it anyway. So essentially, both rice and Alka-Seltzers are a bad idea.
