Wildlife Tip of The Week

What do snakes eat and how do they catch their food?

A snake's natural diet will depend very much on the species of snake you're talking about. Garter snakes, for example, are a very common and non-venomous snake found across the entire US, and although they might snap if they are threatened and cornered, are more likely to slither away. They are generally non-aggressive snakes. These ones are carnivorous, eating many of the foods that you'd find in your back gardensmall mammals and rodents (mice and rats), crickets and grasshoppers, snails, worms, slugs, other bugs and insects. However, flip things around and look at a slightly different snake speciesthe black rat snakeand the main food source of this species is just as the name suggests ... rats and other rodents. It will also east babies of small mammals and vermin as well as lizards, frogs and even birds or bird eggs. For the most part, the snakes themselves learn to adapt in their own environment, often catering their diet to suit the habitat they've found themselves in.
