Wildlife Tip of The Week

Is it safe to handle snakes with my bare hands?

Obviously the answer to this question is noit is NOT safe to handle a snake with your bare hands. And why would you want to? This snake is likely to be very angry by your handling of it, it is a wild animal after all, and you should proceed with the same caution you would have with other wild critterssquirrels, raccoons, opossums, etc. In fact, you should be more careful with snakes because you can never be too sure what kind of species you will be dealing with and whether or not a bite could prove fatal with the help of a little venom. In Florida alone there are four venomous snakes to watch out forthe Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake, Floridan Cottonmouth, and Eastern Coral Snake. Some of these look like other non-venomous snakes and it would be easy for to confuse the two. To be on the safe side, never approach a snake with your bare hands ... Never approach a snake at all. Unless you get too close and make it feel threatened, there's a good chance it'll slither off into the sunset anyway. They dislike human interaction (noise and sounds, etc.) as much as you hate them being in your home.
