Wildlife Tip of The Week

Yellow rat snake

The yellow rat snake is a lovely snake with a golden color and dark brown stripes. It belongs to the family of constrictor snakes, and uses its coils to squeeze prey until the animal stops struggling. This particular snake is found in the southern United States, with a similar subspecies found specifically in the Everglades. The animal can grow to be six feet long, and because it is often found in trees, you will most likely find the yellow rat snake in forested areas, though it is fond of farms because of the abundance of rodents. While the name implies a diet exclusive to rats, the rat snake also feeds on birds. Rat snakes are one of the more common snakes found in pet stores. They are docile and easy to maintain in a confined environment. Be aware that finding a rat snake in the wild and scooping it up for use as a pet may not result in the same timid nature you'd expect in a pet store snake. Wild snakes are used to living in the wild. Any change of environment will make them uneasy and more inclined to erratic behavior.
