Wildlife Tip of The Week

Describe armadillo skin/armor, and how it helps the animal

The nine-banded armadillo is the one you’re more likely to see around and about, the most widespread of all armadillo species, and not only are they the most widespread, they’re also the biggest and heaviest, weighing up to kg or lbs, and they can grow up toinches in length in the biggest of them, standing almost a foot tall. These are about the same size of animal, weight-wise, as a raccoon or a medium to large dog. As you can imagine, it’s an animal that you’ll definitely see if it’s out and about. Unlike other types of armadillo, the nine-banded one cannot roll itself up into a ball despite having similar and overlapping scales, making it look a little like something out of the dinosaur era. It can float however, and the bottom of it’s body are covered in coarse hair and thick skin. They are well protected, the overlapping scales protecting them from above and the thick and tough skin on the bottomthat’s why it looks the way it does, those banded plates are a defense mechanism much like the skunk has its foul-smelling spray.
