Wildlife Tip of The Week

Do United States otters have stripes

The United States river otter tends to be one of the largest of the North American otters, something that is attributed to the abundant food and mild temperature of the region. United States otters are found near rivers, streams, marshes, and swamps. The animal prefers areas of moving water, though it has been known to invade ponds or lakes that have been stocked with fish. The color of the United States otter might make it appear as if it were striped, though the actual color difference is between coat layers. The under coat is usually very dark with a lighter belly. The guard hairs are also dark; however, a lighter color is often seen on the dorsal hairs. This difference in hue can give the otter the appearance of a stripe. Some animals may have genetic abnormalities that give them unique color combinations, but this is the exception and not the rule. Otters are playful, entertaining animals, and they only become nuisance creatures when they sneak into places where humans are trying to propagate a decent fish population. In this situation, while lethal trapping is effective, live trapping will preserve this enjoyable animal and allow it to be relocated to a safe location.
