Wildlife Tip of The Week

Raccoons and mothballs

If you take some time to do the research, you will notice that mothballs are indicated for the removal of every pest on the planet. Not only do mothballs not work for critters like rats, mice, and armadillos, they are just as ineffective against smarter animals like the raccoon. Raccoons are a unique species because of their ingenuity and problem-solving skills. Even if raccoons did hate the smell of mothballs, the mammal would most likely just find a way to cover them up or move them. But that isn't even the situation. There is nothing about mothballs that alarms a raccoon. While the box of white insecticide is effective against insects, it does not put off enough fumes to chase away larger animals. If you were to put enough mothballs inside your home to harm a raccoon, you would not be able to live there, either. The good thing about mothballs is that they are inexpensive if you really want to give them a try; however, be aware that the substance is a known carcinogen in people. If you have a raccoon currently in the building, don't waste your time trying to repel the creature. This situation warrants trapping and removal, and some states require this to be done by a professional.
