Wildlife Tip of The Week
When it comes to home remedies for getting critters out of the attic, the good news is that most of them are inexpensive. The bad news is that none of them work in a reliable fashion. The most common method for nuisance animal repelling is to put out mothballs. Again, this is not expensive to try, but there is a good reason why you should skip this test. You don't have to take anyone's word on it that mothballs are ineffective; however you do need to know that this chemical is a known carcinogen for humans. If you have children in the home, rethink this home remedy. Much safer(though still ineffective) methods revolve around the idea of citrus smells. Orange peels, citrus spray, lemon juice, are all possible repellents for critters. Keep in mind that there is nothing threatening about an orange peel, and some nuisance animals will probably eat it rather than run way from it. The same flaw is found with the use of mint or peppermint oils. Wild animals are not instinctually afraid of either of these two items, and they will just ignore them or find a way to bury them if the smell really is that potent. For the most part, anything you use in your home would have to be of such a high concentration to be effective that you wouldn't want to live there, either.
