Wildlife Tip of The Week
Skunks are found in most of The United States. They will be similar in coloration to other skunks around the country with a dark body and lighter colored stripes down their back. When threatened, skunks do not always spray, a defense mechanism that people think is used all the time. In reality, a skunk will only spray if it is the last resort. Releasing the scent they are so well-known for means that they will need to produce more—something that doesn't happen very quickly. A skunk that has discharged its scent gland will be defenseless for a significant period of time. Removal of skunks is similar to any other wild animal. The skunk can be captured with the use of a cage trap and then relocated to a safe area way from the home. Once you've captured the skunk, cover the trap with a tarp so the animal remains calm. This will also protect you from any smell that might occur from the animal being frightened. Trapping skunks should not be done without proper research as neighborhood cats often wander into the traps as well. United States also has something called the skunk ape, but this is more of a legend than a commonly seen species.
