Wildlife Tip of The Week

Rat trapped in attic will it leave

If the rat is truly trapped in the attic then by definition it can't leave even if it wanted to. A rat that has been confined to an attic needs to be trapped and removed or it will try to leave the area by chewing through your building's innards. A rat that has wandered in through an existing hole will probably leave only to return again. A rat inside is always trouble; these animals are looking for a place to develop a decent shelter. If the rat came in and liked what it saw, you can bet that it will be back and will probably bring others with it. Surprisingly, the get rid of the rat, you actually do want it to be trapped inside your attic. By closing up the rat hole, you are preventing the problem rat from leaving as well as preventing new rats from joining the party. The trapped rat will be easier to catch in a snap trap because it will grow hungry and enticed by the peanut butter on the spring plate. The first step to eliminating rats is to repair the open areas of your home. You should never assume that a rat will leave on its own; you should be concerned that it got inside at all. Rats are not the only animals that will take advantage of an opening in the building. Raccoons, opossums, and squirrels will make fast work out of a tiny hole, enlarging it into something truly annoying.
