Wildlife Tip of The Week

Can you trap a bird such as a pigeon in a cage?

If you catch a bird or pigeon in a cage, you'd best be prepared to drive a minimum of 10,000 miles away to be sure it can't come back. And even then, you can't be all that sure. Pigeons are well known for their ‘homing' abilitieshaven't you ever heard the term ‘homing pigeon'? For years these birds have been used to pass on messages over thousands of miles, trusting them to use their homing abilities and make it back home. What makes you think that life is going to go so easy as you catching the pigeon, driving a few miles away, and then releasing it to live a happy and healthy life. Firstly, you probably won't be able to drive as far enough away as you would need to go to make sure the flying beast didn't come back and secondly, these birds are sociable birds. If you dump them in a brand new territory, not only will your bird not have any friends or family around, it won't know where to go for shelter or protection against predators, and it won't know where to find food or water either. There's a pretty good chance that you will kill the pigeon inadvertently, making your trapping efforts practically pointless in the first place. The only way to successfully get rid of pigeons is using exclusion methodsencouraging the birds to fly out and restricting / removing their ability to get back in. Eventually they'll give up and set up home somewhere else, preferably far away from your home.
