Wildlife Tip of The Week

Raccoon fleas and health

A raccoon in the house does not just mean a health risk from the animal biting you or a family member. There are many other reasons why wild animals are dangerous, and the fleas on that raccoon are no exception. Fleas in the house mean much more than just itchy pets and children. Fleas can carry some serious illnesses, especially when they arrive on a wild pest. Fleas can carry bubonic plague and typhus. Both of these illnesses can require hospitalization to remedy. Beyond complex diseases, fleas also carry tapeworms, and it only takes ingestion of one flea for a human or a pet to get the intestinal parasite. The good thing about tapeworms is that this parasite does not harm its host. The tapeworm feeds off of the nutrients in the intestinal tract, and any resulting symptoms are from secondary issues, not from the worm itself. Not that anyone wants a tapeworm, regardless. The best way to avoid fleas from raccoons is to keep raccoons out of your home. This is easily accomplished through good home maintenance and observation. Make sure there are no openings in your home's exterior that might tempt a raccoon into sneaking inside.
