Wildlife Tip of The Week

Does poisoning a pigeon work?

Although there is just the one registered bird or pigeon poison on the market, it's never a good idea to use it and there are plenty of reasons behind that. In fact, without beating around the bush, let's list them ... You'll soon start to understand why it's not a very good idea. You'll probably poison other birds, birds that you might actually want in your garden. What's the point in having a beautiful bird feeder if you're just going to accidentally poison the birds that are visiting it? Good birds and bad? If you don't poison other birds, you might poison your own pets, your own kids, or the pets and kids that live in your neighborhood. Poison is dangerous and it's very difficult to be precise with it. Put it around haphazardly and you'll kill everything within a few-miles radius. Don't put enough down and you won't kill the birds, you'll just maim them, causing a long and painful death or risking them being attacked by prey animals. When you come down to it, it's just not humane. You'll have a body-disposal issue to deal with once you've killed the birdsan appropriate one that covers all the disease risks. In most states it is actually illegal to kill or move birds, especially while they're nesting, so before you take any action you'll need to do your research anyway.
