Wildlife Tip of The Week

My cat caught a rat are there more?

One rat does not always mean multiple rats; however, more often than not a rat is not alone. The pheromones given off by rats and mice eventually attract others to the same location. This gives the rat the opportunity to breed. Family groups tend to stay together, and you can see how quickly one rat can turn into twenty rats. It is possible that the cat caught a rat that was just investigating the house and had not yet moved in. You will be able to tell this if you investigate your home and find no signs of rodent infestation. If you go into your attic and find trails of droppings, urine marks, and marks from body grease, you know that rats have been inside the house for some time. Finding one rat means one thing, regardless of whether or not there are more: You have a hole somewhere in the exterior of your home. Somehow the rat got inside, and you need to find where as soon as possible. Sealing up the openings in your home is the only way to prevent rodents from getting inside. Until you do this, rats will keep getting into the house, and one cat will not be enough to curb the population.
