Wildlife Tip of The Week
If you have bird or pigeon feces in your attic, it is important to make sure you clean them up, not just because the feces themselves are unsightly and will start to smell, but also because it's quite corrosive feces and it will corrode a number of materialsconcrete, wood, etc. When you add to that the fact that pigeon guano or pigeon droppings also contains a number of disease threats, one of which is the rare but dangerous Psittacosis, a disease that brings flu-like symptoms two or three weeks after you have become initially infected with it, and in serious cases can lead to pneumonia. If left untreated because it's believed to be a ‘touch of the flu', it could actually prove fatal. Bearing that in mind, you'll need some strong cleaner when attempting to tackle the pigeon poop problem, with cleaning equipment you don't mind throwing away or burning once you're done, and gloves, clothes you can throw away (or a hazmat-style suit), and very importantly, a breathing mask. It sounds like a lot but it's necessary to ensure the disease threat is kept to a minimum. The diseases might be rare but they are still around, and many birds can carry the latter.
