Wildlife Tip of The Week

Rat in the house won't go for traps why?

Rats in a home are usually not picky eaters, but some of their habits do indicate why they might not be going to your traps. The type of traps you use will have a big impact on how many rats you catch. Rats are leery of entering a box, despite the fact that they squeeze into our homes without a second thought. Box traps, like the electrocution trap, will not catch you many rats. Glue traps are also less effective than homeowners would like them to be. The glue trap rarely holds an adult rat for very long if the animal even gets onto the pad to begin with. Your best traps for catching rats are snap traps. These devices can be baited and then reused. They do not offer anything that would make the rat too nervous, keeping all components open and visible to the rodent. Trap type is not the only reason why you might not be having luck catching rats. The first step to good rat catching is to close up all the rat holes prior to starting the trapping process. If rats can come and go as they please while you try to catch them, not only will you have new rats entering the building, you will lose the appeal of your bait because the current rats will be able to find food sources elsewhere.
