Wildlife Tip of The Week

Rat poison thirsty

Rat poison does sometimes make rats thirsty, and is one of the reasons why people think the animals migrate toward water before they die. Poison creates internal bleeding and prevents clotting. The body sees this suddenly loss of fluid to vital organs as dehydration and urges the rat to find water. In reality, all of the blood has now pooled in the body cavities. Poisoning is a terrible way for any animal to die, and it is highly discouraged in the use of rat control. Not only will poisoned rats suffer to their last breath, they will often slide into tight spaces within the home's walls to die. When five or six rat bodies begin to decompose, the resulting smell is not pleasant. You will have to remove all the remains for the odor to go away. In addition to these pitfalls, rats will seldom eat poison. This has to do with the fact that rats are scavengers and always sample their food before complete ingestion. If they feel ill, they will not continue to eat. A rat that became sick from tasting poison will never try to eat it again. If you're trying to get rid of rats, snap traps are still the most reliable and effective way to go about it.
