Wildlife Tip of The Week

Getting rid of raccoons on roof

There are some reasons to be concerned about raccoons on the roof. If your home is older, it might not take much effort for a raccoon to open up a soffit or an eave and enter the building. Even homes that are kept in good repair can fall victim to a determined raccoon. Not only do raccoons mean potential damage to your home, the masked critters also leave droppings and urine on the shingles. This might not seem like a big deal, but rain water can wash these substances down onto items like woodpiles and garbage cans. If the raccoon has leptospirosis, the disease will now be attached to the wood and then carried into the house. Infection through this secondary route is rare, but it is not impossible. The best way to keep raccoons off the roof is to eliminate the ways they are climbing onto the roof. Keep trees away from your home and eliminate any other tall structures that could be scaled. Sometimes there is nothing that can be adjusted, and you will just have to be diligent about repairing any damage the raccoons cause. After a while of not being able to break into the building, the pests will move on to a new location.
