Chipmunks are everywhere, and your state is certainly no exception. When compared to other rodents, the chipmunk is much more tolerable and far less destructive to a home. What the chipmunk does that drives homeowners crazy is dig up the roots and bulbs of precious garden plants. A chipmunk does not want to live inside of your house. It will, however, live under your patio or doorstep. You can usually tell you have a chipmunk by finding a small, smooth hole in the ground. There will be no dirt mound around the outside; the chipmunk carries surplus dirt from tunneling inside the pouches of its cheeks. Chipmunk holes are sometimes mistaken for snake holes and vice versa; however, snakes will not tunnel, and their den openings are usually more irregular. Chipmunk management can be more challenging because the little guys are outside rather than inside. You can use a cage trap to capture chipmunks, but the bait that will attract a chipmunk will also attract many other animals. Some people opt for exclusion methods rather than complete removal. Special bird feeders and fencing around gardens is often enough to keep chipmunks at bay.
